My Hawaiian Bookshelf

Here are some books you should check out if you're coming to visit me (or, you can wait and pull 'em right off my shelf!)

Doughty, Andrew. Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed. Wizard Publications, Inc, 5th ed, 2008.
The clear top for any list of Hawaii tourist guidebooks
This book is crazy extensive.  It is the best for finding beaches, hikes, trails, snorkel spots and other outdoor adventures.  For sure the best tourist guidebook I've seen if you like to be outside or find "off the beaten path/DIY" stuff like me-- though I think many new paths are being beaten down because of this book. Still, get it for sure. Their website looks pretty good.
Hazlet, Richard W. Roadside Geology of Hawai'i / Richard W. Hazlett, Donald W. Hyndman. Mountain Press Publishing, Missoula, MT. 1996.
Comprehensive geology guidebook.  I met the author-- my field partner in Mexico was one of his advisees!

Pratt, H. Douglas.  A Pocket Guide to Hawai`i's Trees and Shrubs. Mutual Publishing, 1998.
A good one for quick ID, based on habitats. Given to me by my landlords!  Awesome.

Kane, Herb Kawainui, Ancient Hawai'i.  The Kawainui Press, 1997.
This guy is an awesome painter, and has done very thorough research about ancient hawaiian lifestyles. A fun, quick, and gorgeous book.

Pratt, H. Douglas, A Pocket Guide to Hawai'i's Birds.  Mutual Publishing, 1996.
This book is better than its counterpart, the pocket guide to trees, because it has more information on each bird, and there are fewer species covered.
Daws, Gavin.  Shoal of Time: A History of the Hawaiian Islands. University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu, 1968.
The definitive history of Hawaii, from just before Captain Cook's contact to the 1960's.  Well researched and fairly presented. Not a quick read
Kepler, Angela Kay. Trees of Hawai'i. University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu, 1990.
Trees and plants are really hard here without a lot of work and help from knowledgeable people. This is another good resource for the aresenal.
